Landscape lighting renovation in Los Angeles

Landscape lighting renovation in Los Angeles

By Mike Gambino

Another landscape lighting renovation project in Los Angeles completed. I believe I am one of the few who can genuinely say that they love what they do.

Working in the landscape lighting industry, like any other type of career, has its good days and bad days, but overall I love what I do and the challenges it presents to me on pretty much a daily basis.

This low voltage circuit has too much load (wattage) and is overloading the amperage capacity of the cable. This is a potentially dangerous situation and also results in dim lights

Landscape lighting renovations are a whole challenge unto themselves. I always get a great deal of pleasure from new landscape lighting construction, it gives me an empty canvas which I can work into a completely unique work of art that my customer will hopefully love and appreciate. My medium to create my artwork is the landscape tress, boulders, plants, and water; and when my mind is left to run I can come up with some amazing and inspired designs. Then along comes a renovation.
Landscape lighting renovations are usually desired by a client who has had a bad experience with the original installation that was built for them. The bad experience can come from any direction such as poor design, poor light quality, poor electrical engineering, poor workmanship, maintenance nightmare, inexperienced contractor, or all the above. The landscape lighting renovation service is often times more of a challenge because it can be very hard to win over customers’ trust and assure them that Gambino landscape lighting will leave them with a beautiful landscape lighting installation, that’s easy to maintain, and with lasting results. The customer can be cynical, after all, the previous guy told them the same thing I’m telling them; the biggest difference is that I’m telling them the truth.

Once the hurdle of contracting the lighting renovation job is passed, then comes the challenge of re-doing someone else’s vision, which most often ends up being a complete tear-out and redo to the way I build landscape lighting systems. Of course tearing out a landscape lighting system and rebuilding is a bit more difficult than just a straight installation, but the reward of a happy client is all the sweeter.

This fixture is operating at 3.9 volts and is a result of very poor landscape lighting system engineering. It appears orange and very dim and ineffective at night. Lamps are designed to operate at 12 volts so it is evident how off this installer was in designing his circuits.

Seeing the relief of the client, when their new landscape lighting is turned on and the the yard comes to life and everything works! Then on our follow up visits for maintenance later is the confirmation that we have done right by our client as now they have a beautiful system that with scheduled maintenance will last a lifetime.
At the end of a landscape lighting renovation, the reward of having a happy client who can now tell the story of how their nightmare system was transformed into the beautiful dream landscape lighting they always wanted is a story that will hopefully bring new and eager clients to the Gambino landscape lighting family of landscape lighting system owners, and a story they will likely tell anyone who will listen. Word of mouth is the best advertising….even in the landscape lighting world.
