Dramatic Garden Statue LED Lighting in Silver Lake

Dramatic Garden Statue LED Lighting in Silver Lake

By Mike Gambino

This winter we received a call from a prospective client to come out to consult and provide a quotation for a new project to illuminate 3  large statues that the owners had just imported from overseas. Like many of our projects, this call came from a referral from a past project that we completed. In this case we were referred by a client who hired us to dramatically illuminate several statues from a neighbor right down the street from this new project.

Originally the main subjects were the three statues but as we got talking about how the backyard pool area is to be used for occasional parties it became clear a more extensive energy saving LED system made sense. Not only was much of the backyard illuminated but the front yard got a fresh treatment as well. An old existing 120 volt system was removed (many of the electrical boxes were embedded in trunks and roots of trees. And a dilapidated ineffective low voltage halogen system with cable exposed and laying above ground was also removed to make way for the new Gambino LED landscape lighting system.

It was a very difficult install as the property was filled with very large trees which meant lots of surface roots to navigate under and around. It also had multiple levels and hardscape features which needed to be passed under to provide power to the fixtures.

The project wrapped up this week and the clients were extremely pleased with the results. Not only were the beloved statues beautifully illuminated but the mirror image in the pool was an added bonus as the clients were not expecting this added enhancement.

I really like this photo above not only for the obvious reason because it captures the mirror image of the statue reflected in the swimming pool. But it also displays the excellent color rendering ability of  the high performance  2700 to 2900 degree kelvin warm color temperature Gambino LED lamp’s. The greenery of the plants are green. The earth tone color of the statue and tree branches above and behind the statue are accurate and precise. And the real test is the off white to grey trunk of the established Ficus tree to the right of the statue which is also properly rendered by the capability of the LED lamp.

Soft Back lighting effects of the tropical plants and stucco walls surrounding the statues add supporting depth  and background to the main focal points which are of course the statues themselves.

This pond is located in a different part of the backyard from the pool area. Beyond the pond is a view of Silver Lake.

This garden space has many mature tropical plants which leads one to feel they are on an exotic island rather than a residential property in Los Angeles.

Two 3 watt 45 degree spread low profile “Trevi” LED accent down lights were strategically positioned high inside the peak of the gazebo to shine light through the candle chandelier to create the illusion that the chandelier is providing the illumination. A remote dimmer and separate toggle switch was installed at the top back side of one of the columns so the owners could dim the sitting area lighting or turn off complety from the rest of the garden.
