All too common mistake of Not Selecting an Experienced Landscape Lighting Specialist.

All too common mistake of Not Selecting an Experienced Landscape Lighting Specialist.

By Mike Gambino

mistakesExperience only comes from repetitive behavior over an extended period of time.  The successful completion of multiple projects of various types and sizes will allow for skills to be mastered.  If landscape lighting is important to you, only do business with an experienced professional.

The landscape lighting design-build profession is no different than any other professional service provider, whether a doctor, accountant, computer programmer, attorney, or trade craftsman.  Seek out those are only perform this specialized service, as this is the only way to ensure the care you deserve.

To this point, don’t be fooled by the multitudes of contractors or handymen that profess to have the ability to do this work.  Many of these types only attend a seminar at the local distributor supplying these products, and that is no replacement for years of specialized field experience.

If you are discerning by nature and take great pride in your property, then not selecting an experienced professional is likely to be problematic.  Improvements to your home are no different than going to a general practitioner when you are seriously ill—they should be handled or addressed with the same care.

I would like to add that by selecting a professional service provider, you will ensure that you will have the support you need in the future.  All landscape lighting systems will require scheduled maintenance and services.  The professional you select will typically be available for this service work.  If the company you are about to hire does not have a customer base for regular maintenance services, then this should be a ‘red flag.’  Most professional landscape lighting contractors have this as part of their company functions.

There are several reasons why not to select a non-experienced contractor:

Lack of experience in the trade professional practices

  • Lack of artistic ability or creativity to capture effects and mood enhancing scenes
  • Lack of serviceability for future repair needs or maintenance needs
  • Lack of technical support, whether by phone or field service call
  • Lack of priority to take care of your needs over their primary work
  • Lack of passion to care about you and your lighting system
  • Lack of inventory or basic lighting stock components for system repairs
