Tips for finding a landscape and Garden lighting design and Installation specialist

By Mike Gambino

The time has come that you have made that decision to have a professional custom landscape lighting system designed and installed on your property. You want a creatively designed and functional system, you want the best equipment, low maintenance, low electrical power consumption with an easy to use controller, the exact opposite of the first or second attempt you made hiring general trades whose system didn’t perform or last and wasted tons of money on, while never getting the results you want. This time you are going to hire a professional landscape lighting specialist!

But how do you find a professional landscape lighting specialist? Where do you find a landscape lighting designer/builder specialist? These aren’t your everyday contractors. Landscape and Garden lighting system specialists are not the kind of contractor you may run into at Home Depot or Lowes. So where is the best place to begin your search for the landscape lighting designer/builder who is going to make you property come to life after dark?

Surely the easiest, fastest, and best way to find a landscape lighting specialist is to simply hop on Google, Bing, or Yahoo and do a search for “landscape lighting (your state)”; for example “Landscape lighting specialist Los Angeles”. This simple search should give you many varied companies that specialize in landscape and garden lighting system design and  installations. This simple search will give you landscape and garden lighting system installation companies that will be best equipped to handle such a project. It will also connect you with landscape lighting specialty companies that will be able to support you AFTER the project is completed, something the “Jack of all Landscape and Electrical contracting” companies cannot and do not offer. The majority of specialty landscape lighting installers will offer maintenance and support services for your system, your fixtures, and your controller long after the project is done to ensure your long term satisfaction.

Another good way via the internet to find landscape lighting specialists is to use home improvement sites like Houzz,. On these sites you can also do a search for “landscape lighting specialists”. These sites will provide you qualified connections with a choice of several landscape and garden lighting specialists. Contractors on these sites need to meet certain criteria to qualify to be listed on these sites as a safeguard for the consumer. The contractor connections provided are based on the information you provide such as your address and zip code, etc.

Some landscape lighting equipment manufacturing companies will offer certified contractor locators as well. Customers simply fill in their information and a choice local certified contractors will be provided. This may not be the best way because obviously their recommendations will be limited to those contractors who only specify and use their products.

One of the best ways to locate landscape and garden lighting specialist companies are by recommendations from those you know and trust who had a positive experience and end result with their project. This may be old fashioned but still one of the best ways to find qualified landscape lighting designer builders who you know already have at least one successful project.

The fun way to find a landscape lighting specialist is through social media sites like like Facebook which will connect you with landscape and garden lighting companies….and lots of them! Some will have pictures of completed projects on their page or links to blog articles and websites where you can learn more about them before even contacting them.

Once you find your landscape and Garden lighting specialist, you have some decisions to make those Garden lighting dreams of yours come true.

View their work. Experienced specialist landscape lighting companies should have 100’s of completed project photos readily available for you to see. If they don’t then that should be a huge red flag. If you don’t care for the style depicted in the project photos then you probably won’t be too happy with the end result of your project.

Bartman-NymphIn the process have some fun and don’t be afraid to ask your lighting specialist for some addresses so you can tour their work after dark, most landscape lighting specialists are happy to show off their work! And when the project is complete why not take a picture, make a video and share your dream with all of the others who are landscape lighting obsessed.

Mike, great points. I especially am pleased that you mentioned the fact that many of the manufacturers will provide referrals to guys doing lighting, but these are very skewed to who uses their products. This is important because there are so many manufacturers out there….many are mediocre and many are not really manufacturers…they are nothing more than importers. I would say to the consumer to be ‘very careful’ on this use of information, because the goals and motives of the manufacturer are purely sales of their products above anything else.

I also think it would be helpful to the public/consumer to do searches on those who specialize in ‘landscape lighting design,’ because many do not have this ability or specialty. Everyone says they are a designer and they install, but there’s a distinct difference in quality/service with what one truly offers.

Thanks for posting. Great job, as usual.
