LED heat testing

LED heat testing

by Mike Gambino

It has been mentioned before here that LED’s are laboratory tested by manufacturers to better determine or predict the lifespan of their LED lamps. Shown below are photos of such tests being done with Gambino CREE LED lamps inside Gambino Toscano brass accent fixtures.

Fixtures are placed into what looks like an oven or large microwave where the temperature can be controlled and monitored.

In the enclosed fixtures that they are going to be used in is the only valid way to test LED’s.

Personally I don’t hold much credence in these tests, however since the technology is so new at this point, and no one has a clue what is going to happen as the years pass outdoors, it’s all we really have except a guess and a positive thought.

So far in the five months or so that I have been offering my LED’s which have been specially tuned to operate in Gambino fixtures I have had 2 failures in over 1,500 installations. Both within 2 weeks of installation. One on my own property and one on a clients which were promptly replaced. That is actually lower than any halogen lamp percentage that I have ever experienced. That is to be expected though based upon the promises of the manufacturer and extended warranty issued.

Overall I am exceptionally pleased with the performance of my LED’s to date. I will be offering higher wattage halogen replacements in the near future as technology advances and when the samples that the manufacturers continually send me finally meet my stringent criteria for color, performance and price.

It gives me a good feeling that I am doing my part to offer lamps that are environmentally friendly during their lifetime by way of energy savings and when it comes time to dispose of them they will not be harmful to the environment because they contain no mercury of other harmful metals.
