The Value of the landscape lighting expert

The Value of the landscape lighting expert

by Mike Gambino

Nothing exemplified the importance and value of expertise better than last Monday night NFL football’s debacle created by replacement referees on the final play of the game on national television. It is estimated that  250 million dollars were lost on legal bets on the game by those who took the favored team and lost the game due to a blown call. The Greenbay Packers franchise stands to lose millions of dollars if this mistake keeps them from a playoff bid. Time will tell.

So what is Expertise. This is wikipedias definition:

An expert is someone widely recognized as a reliable source of technique or skill whose faculty for judging or deciding rightly, justly, or wisely is accorded authority and status by their peers or the public in a specific well-distinguished domain. An expert, more generally, is a person with extensive knowledge or ability based on research, experience, or occupation and in a particular area of study. Experts are called in for advice on their respective subject, but they do not always agree on the particulars of a field of study. An expert can be, by virtue of credential, training, education, profession, publication or experience, believed to have special knowledge of a subject beyond that of the average person, sufficient that others may officially(and legally) rely upon the individual’s opinion. The individual was usually a profound thinker distinguished for wisdom and sound judgement.

Experts have a prolonged or intense experience through practice and education in a particular field. In specific fields, the definition of expert is well established by consensus and therefore it is not necessary for an individual to have a professional or academic qualification for them to be accepted as an expert. In this respect, a shepherd with 50 years of experience tending flocks would be widely recognized as having complete expertise in the use and training of sheep dogs and the care of sheep. Another example from computer science is that an expert systems may be taught by a human and thereafter considered an expert, often outperforming human beings at particular tasks. In law, an expert witnesss must be recognized by argument and authority.

Research in this area attempts to understand the relation between expert knowledge and exceptional performance in terms of cognitive structures and processes. The fundamental research endeavor is to describe what it is that experts know and how they use their knowledge to achieve performance that most people assume requires extreme or extraordinary ability. Studies have investigated the factors that enable experts to be fast and accurate.

What is a landscape lighting expert? There are two critical areas of expertise required in landscape lighting.

Design- A trusted source that specifies and supplies only the highest quality products and solutions tailored to each individual client’s needs and project. One that understands fixture type, placement and qty required to satisfactorily complete the job in the most economical fashion. For instance that means using 5 fixtures if 5 fixtures are required or 3 fixtures if 3 fixtures are required to illuminate a specimen. Not making decisions based solely upon their own economic benefit or only for the economic benefit of the client. But making decisions based on what the best end result of the project will be. Choice of the best lamp and optic lenses, louvres, shields and glare shields to put the icing on the cake.

Electrical Engineering- Having the electrical knowledge and skill to design and balance electrical loads. In the case of low voltage lighting designing and building circuits that are going to result in all lamps burning at the proper acceptable voltage range recommended by the manufacturers so the best performance and reliability is achieved.
