Benefits of working with a design/build owner-operated landscape lighting business

By Mike Gambino

An owner-operator is essentially a sole proprietor, or an incorporated business in which the owner also runs the daily operations of his or her company. An owner-operator has the right to make all decisions regarding the business, without input from anyone such as a partner or board of directors. Because of the business structure all financial and legal elements of the company are tied directly to the owner-operator.

patio-15In the home improvement contracting business it is not uncommon for a larger non owner-operated company to send out a salesperson or company employee to meet with a prospect and sell the project. This person may or may not be the person who designs the job but most often is not the person who will be onsite to manage the day to day operations. In fact the installation process may require the involvement of several contact people including salesperson, project designer, site supervisor and company owner who may or may not even meet the actual property owner/buyer.

In my opinion on a smaller home improvement project such as landscape lighting this business structure is not well adept or positioned to successfully , efficiently and effectively complete the job.

That is why since its inception some 26 yrs ago Gambino Landscape Lighting inc. has been an owner operated full service landscape lighting provider. To this day, yours truly, Mike Gambino, sells, installs, services and maintains every single project we are fortunate enough to be a part of. In fact I am onsite and available working on the project virtually every minute of every project. This is a tremendous benefit to the property owner/buyer. The key benefits are|

1- Continuity throughout the lifetime of the project– The owner of the company is the designer, installer and ongoing care taker of your lighting system. They have a vested interest in your complete current and future satisfaction and they also have complete control of it.

2- One contact – When a project is going on there are going to be questions, issues discussed, instructions conveyed and changes made. Having the decision maker on site is not only convenient but eliminates all potential misconceptions, misunderstandings, time loss which can hold up work progress and pitfalls associated with going through intermediaries. In the contracting business in California English is typically not the first language or understood at all by workers.

3- Accountability– No need to go up the chain of command to find the responsible person. No ambiguity as to who that is either. owner has the ability to deal direct and save lost time, frustration and aggravation.

4- Efficiencies– Having the owner-operator for your project brings with it greater efficiencies than dealing with non owner-operated companies. Some of which have already been mentioned and along with efficiencies comes lower costs which is always a welcomed owner benefit.

5- Pride shown in the work– Owner-operator contractors are ambitious and entrepreneurial by nature but they are also creators, artists and hands on micro managers. Sticklers for getting the best results, perfectionists if you will. Personally speaking I can tell you that I experience a tremendous amount of satisfaction from taking ideas I have in my head and bringing them to reality while controlling every aspect of the process. Every project is personal, it’s like a new child that gets nurtured to maturity and you want to see it do well and make people happy. It is also a goal to keep it alive long after we are gone and stand as a legacy to our life’s work. It’s an indescribable feeling of accomplishment and the benefactor is the property owner who gets to live with the lighting system and bring joy to their life every day.
