High Quality, High Performance Professionally Designed and installed Landscape and Garden Lighting is a huge waste of money !

By Mike Gambino

This is a provocative title for a blog article and may come as a complete surprise especially when coming from someone who derives one hundred percent of their income from designing, building and providing High Quality, High Performance Professionally Designed landscape and garden lighting services and products for home and business owners and has done so for close to 30 years.

But the truth is High Quality, High Performance Professionally Designed and Installed Landscape and Garden Lighting is a huge waste of money. Let me qualify that, it is a huge waste of money for most folks.

But this article is not going to focus on the majority of property owners that do not value this type of outdoor lighting. So who is this high end property amenity for?

Those that Absolutely Love their Properties

First off, unless you have some kind of a strong emotional attachment to the property you either live in or operate your business out of, then chances are high that you won’t consider investing the kind of money it will cost for High Quality, High Performance Professionally Designed and Installed Landscape and Garden Lighting. The same types of people who value professional design services like interior design, landscape design etc. are also prime candidates for this type of high end outdoor lighting amenity.

Those whose primary interest is NOT recouping 100% or more of their investment when they sell

That is not to say that one’s investment cannot or will not be returned or increased upon the sale of the property but it is not their primary reason for investing in a system.  I know for a fact that homes that I have designed and installed the outdoor lighting at including properties I have personally owned and sold have retained their investment value and have actually helped accelerate the sale of the property and in down real estate markets. Of course all markets are different and there are no guarantees but my point is most who are installing these systems are not primarily doing it for a future owners benefit but for their own.

Appreciation for Art and the finer things in Life and have the means and are willing to pay the price

In this case the artistry itself is not the landscape and garden lighting equipment itself. The corner stone principle of a High Quality, High Performance Professionally Designed and Installed Landscape and Garden Lighting system is seeing the effect of the lighting and not the source of it. That is the equipment takes a secondary role, is best hidden, blended in and concealed. The primary focus or stars of the outdoor night environment are the trees, architectural features, statuary, interesting shrubberies, water features etc. And the subtly of the lighting itself is not intrusive or glaring but enhances and accents features and subjects almost seamlessly without drawing attention to itself. there is no way to sugar coat things as the finer things in life always come with a larger price tag. Otherwise everyone would have it. Obviously there is a financial barrier which is prohibitive to most.

That Special Enhanced feeling of safety and security

Sure a simple motion detector mounted at the corners of the building and other key areas can provide some sort of intruder and theft protection. They also can false trigger, be garishly glaring and obtrusive (light trespass) to occupants and annoying to neighboring properties. High Quality, High Performance Professionally Designed and Installed Landscape and Garden Lighting systems DO NOT ANNOY occupants, Neighbors or visitors to the property. Although multiple light sources are located throughout a property, they are of a very low brightness levels, are never aimed at primary viewing areas or in the eyes of or into the windows of neighboring buildings. Unlike motion sensor lights that come on at unplanned times with no control of intensity, brightness or light beam spread and are uncomfortable because of their high contrast between lighted and dark areas. High Quality, High Performance Professionally Designed and Installed Landscape and Garden Lighting system are controlled by the owner of the property- come on and turn off when desired, are fully brightness adjustable and do not create extreme contrast between lighted and unlighted areas. Motion sensored flood lights also have dead spot areas that are difficult or impossible to illuminate leaving shadows for marauders to hide, vandalize or break into and steal from a property.
